Supporting Migrants

It is essential to be familiar with important theoretical aspects
related to multicultural support and working methodically with migrants.
In particular, it is important to be able to recognize several common
problems (including discrimination, language problems, cultural
problems, ‘condition migrante’, emotional and psychosocial problems).
Furthermore, it is important to master the concrete skills needed to
provide support to migrants in a number of situations.
This module focuses on specific problems faced by migrants in practice.
How do you deal with prejudice and discrimination, and how do you
recognize your own prejudices? What significance do material and
immaterial problems have for migrants? How do different value
orientations influence the support process? How do you deal with
language problems (two-word techniques and the use of interpreter
centers)? How can you mediate within the spirit of the migrant’s own
culture? What specific support needs exist for young people, the
elderly, women, and psychosomatic complaints?
